Sweden (Dec 2002)

I spent December 10--17 in Sweden. For the he majority of the trip I was at the 3rd International Conference for Systems Biology (ICSB) 2002 in Stockholm, though I did manage to spend a little time exploring Old Stockholm.

For two days after the conference, a friend of mine, Henrik, showed me around his hometown of Lund.

In general, I took pictures of things I thought looked cool. As such, I don't know the signifigance (if any) of many buildings. Henrik (or Annika) can you help?

As luck would have it, Pauline and I were both presenting papers at the IEEE Aerospace Conference in Big Sky, Montana. Nearly all the pictures are of outdoor scenes.

St. Lucia (Nov 2004)

A week after returning from Germany, I was off to St. Lucia to work with geologists in the caldera of a volcano in Sulphur Springs park.

After our field work was complete, Pauline joined me, Becky and Andres for a very relaxing five days. Among other things, we went swimming and snorkeling at the beach. On Friday night we dined at a streetside market in the nearby fishing village of Anse La Raye. On our second to last day, we went on a hike through the rainforest, down to a secluded waterfall, where we opted for another swim.

Pauline at Goldstone

Pauline took a day trip to Goldstone as part of her work. Goldstone is a military base which houses the "Mars Station" satellites in NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN).

She'll be able to provide a better description and photograph captions.

Minnesota (2002)

Pauline and I visited some of my family in Hutchinson, MN. We also did the obligatory Mall of America trip. At right, my Mom, her husband Paul, my aunt Robyn (my Mom's twin), and me.

Jennie and Brad's Wedding (Nov 2005)

Pauline and I went to Austin, TX to witness the marriage of our friends Jennie and Brad. In addition to the wedding, we walked a few blocks from our hotel to explore the state capitol.

For Pauline's birthday I surprised her with a trip to Vegas. We stayed in a Bellagio suite overlooking the fountains and watched Cirque du Soleil's "O".

I was in Boston, MA in late October for a few days to attend ICSB 2005 and the SBML Forum. Unfortunately, I didn't have much time to explore the town and I didn't bring my camera, so there's only one picture in this album.

Mike Hucka and I visited the MIT Museum and in the basement we found the MIT Model Railroad club room. I thought pushing the buttons would cause the train start, but instead, one of the model buildings lit-up with Tetris (complete with music). Each window (pixel) contained a small white light bulb. A very cool hack!

For Christmas, I went home to Minnesota to visit family and friends and attend Matt and Amber's wedding. I also got to meet Nate's new dog, Samsonite (like the luggage, but smaller).

Pauline hosted a Game Night at her place for New Year's Eve. I'm pretty sure I won at Settlers, but then again, there was alot of alcohol that night. :)

Pauline, Tim, and Dominic surprised me with a trip to San Diego where we rented Segway Human Transporters. We spent several hours driving them around the La Jolla beach area. It was alot of fun!

I wouldn't recommend buying one of these machines, but they sure are neat to try out, especially if you're an engineer at heart.
